ATVBC Announces Next Phase in Multi-Year Trail Standards and Specifications Project
British Columbia – March 20th, 2025 – The Quad Riders Association of British Columbia
(ATVBC) is excited to announce the hiring of Scatliff + Miller + Murray Inc. (SMM) as the lead consultant for the next phase of the ATV Trail Standards and Specifications Development project in British Columbia. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Recreation Sites & Trails BC (RSTBC), is part of a multi-year effort that began in 2022 with the BC Power Sports Coalition, to establish comprehensive trail guidelines.
Following the completion of Phase 1, it was determined that the next step would involve each user group working with RSTBC to guide updates to Chapter 10: Recreation Trail Management.
For ATVBC, this phase focuses on developing a trail classification system and improving standards for ORV trail planning, design, and maintenance, incorporating valuable feedback from ATV riders across the province.
“We are thrilled to have SMM on board for this critical next step,” said Kristin Parsons, Executive Director of ATVBC. “Their expertise in sustainable trail development and community engagement will help ensure that our trail standards meet the needs of ATV riders while aligning with provincial guidelines.”
SMM’s team, led by Project Manager James R. McKnight, will conduct a jurisdictional review, engage ATVBC members and key stakeholders, and provide recommendations to enhance trail policies and best practices. The process includes an ATVBC Member Survey, allowing riders to share insights on trail experiences and expectations.
“This project presents an exciting opportunity to refine ORV trail management practices while enhancing rider experience and environmental stewardship,” said McKnight. “We look forward to collaborating with ATVBC and its members to develop meaningful trail standards that will benefit the ATV community for years to come.”
Daniel Scott from the Trails and Trail Infrastructure Team within the newly formed provincial Parks and Recreation Program (PRP) states that “We are committed to providing guidance and resources to ATVBC and SMM in order to ensure that the outcome of this project is directly applicable to updating our provincial resources, reflecting the current and future state of recreational ATVing throughout BC.”
ATVBC encourages all members to participate in the survey and contribute their perspectives to help shape the future of ORV trails in BC.
